Education

NHSKids includes education as part of our services, to ensure that families are also equipped with the knowledge to help themselves.

Some of the education efforts conducted in 2021 includes:

  • Online "Eye Eye Captain!" Webinar (Eye Health)
  • Online Parenting Webinar (Child Obesity, Healthy Living & Managing Children's Emotions)
  • Recipe Contest & Booklet
  • Educational Booklet

Online "Eye Eye Captain!" Webinar

On 12 March 2022, NHS Kids held a webinar titled "Eye Eye Captain!" in collaboration with SSO @ Bedok and Geylang Serai. Our attendees consist families in the Kembangan-Chai Chee region.

Our speakers were Dr Janice Lam (Consultant for Paediatric Ophthalmology at NUH) and our mentor, Dr Alicia Pon (Senior lecturer in NUS Social Work, Adjunct Clinical Consultant with Playheals Therapy). Dr Lam shared about the impact of screen time usage on children’s eye health, and Dr Pon shared about the slippery slope of childhood device addiction, as well as how parents can help their children to use their electronic devices in a meaningful manner.

Before the event, we mailed out pre-event packages to families who had signed up for the webinar. Included in the package was our very own Activity Booklet for the children to complete while the parents focused on the webinar. The book, titled “Eye Eye Captain!” allowed children to also be actively engaged in learning about eye health and digital health!

A big thank you to Bedok and Geylang Serai, our mentors and most definitely, the families who took the time to attend our webinar!

Online Parenting Webinar

On 29 May 2021, NHS Kids held a webinar titled "Healthy Meals, Brilliant Kids" in conjunction with SSO @ Bedok and Geylang Serai. Our attendees consist of service users of SSO @ Bedok and Geylang Serai as well as other social service agencies in the region.

For the first time, we had both our mentors as speakers for the webinar. Dr Chiong Yee Keow from NUH shared information on how to live and eat healthily whereas Dr Alicia Pon from NUS Social Work gave insight on what certain behaviour exhibited by children may mean. Following that, an exciting game of Kahoot was conducted where the top 3 winners won exciting prizes!

Reflecting from our previous webinars, we have curated our very own Activity Booklet for the children to complete while the parents focus on the webinar. This way, the children would be actively engaged as well in learning how live healthily! The Activity Booklet is split into 3 sections for the various ages groups and children are given tokens once they have completed their respective sections.

Our success for this webinar would not have been possible without SSO @ Bedok and Geylang Serai, our mentors and most definitely the families who took the time to attend it.

Recipe Contest & Booklet

NHS Kids held a recipe contest for the families in the Kembangan-Chai Chee region. This contest came about after the residents have expressed their keenness in learning how to ensure their children eat healthily. Residents – both adults and children – submitted their family recipes with a chance to win attractive prizes.

Following which, these recipes are collated in our very own recipe book! Alongside these recipes, dietitians from NUH has kindly added their input on how to tweak these recipes towards a healthier approach. This recipe book also includes various nutritional tips and ideas, as well as how food can be used to promote the psycho-social development of everyone in the family. Additionally, we have provided certain tips and services should any of the residents face certain difficulties in procuring food.

With this recipe book, NHS Kids hope that it will be a source of inspiration and empowerment for our residents to consistently eat healthily as well as embrace the positive functions food can play in our everyday lives!

Our success for this recipe contest and recipe book would not have been possible without SSO @ Bedok and Geylang Serai, dietitians from NUH, our mentors and most definitely the families who took the time to take part in the contest.
